Chapter 21

‘I’ll go around to the other side.’ Martyn is weaving back to the bar. ‘We don’t want the pickup’s owner seeing it coming back.’

I know this is a risk. If the owner has reported the vehicle missing, and the police are still around, we are walking into a cell for the night. More accurately, for life.

Not knowing the roads, it takes Martyn a few attempts to find the alley. I see it on the third pass. ‘There. Reverse it in and hit the flashers.’

‘Shouldn’t we dump this thing?’

‘No. It’s our backup. Now reverse up further. We don’t want it seen from the road.’

The back entrance of the bar has a small neon sign flickering Miller Lite and a couple of kegs near it. A few yards short of it Martyn halts the car and we jump out.

I try the pub door but it’s locked. ‘Round the front.’

We head onto the road, Martyn in step behind me. I reach the corner to the street that the bar lies on and stop. I push my head out and we are police-vehicle-free.

I press on but after a few steps realize that Martyn isn’t in< tow. He’s standing on the corner, his palm at right angles to his forehead. Looking at something further along the sidewalk.

I join him. ‘What is it?’

‘See the small café? In the middle of the block?’

‘Yes.’

‘Standing outside are two men. See them?’

The two men are standing with their backs to us. Both are entombed in heavyweight winter gear – hoods up. There’s quite a height difference between them. One has to be a few inches above five feet and the other the same above six. They are leaning in close. The tall man head down to the small man.

‘Who are they?’

‘The tall one’s Denholm.’

‘You can tell from here?’

‘Yes.’

‘That could be anyone.’

‘I recognise the coat.’

‘Really?’

‘Really.’

‘Ok, let’s go get him.’

‘Not so fast. It’s the other one who worries me.’

‘Who is he?’

‘Have you heard of Gaylord Butterworth?’

‘No, but with a name like that I’d sure as hell remember if I’d met him. Who is he?’

‘Head of Factor.’

‘Wow?’

‘If it’s him – it’s hard to tell at this distance – I’ve only seen him once and that was only a little closer than this.’

‘And?’

‘Well my main question is what in the hell is he doing here?’

‘Isn’t Factor’s head office near here?’

‘It is, but Gaylord isn’t one for being out and about. At the moment he’s wanted by the FBI, CIA, IRS, local police and then you can add on the enemies he has made over the years. Last I heard he was holed up in Washington State somewhere in the boondocks. He runs the whole organization by remote.’

‘So he’s had a change of heart. Wants some air.’

Martyn turns away and faces the pub. I join him. He starts to shuffle his feet. Nerves.

I tap him on the shoulder. ‘Is he that bad?’

‘A bastard of the first order. He built Factor from nothing into one of the biggest criminal networks in the US. You don’t do that with a pleasant smile and cookies.
